Why British tourists are flocking to Morocco instead of Lanzarote

While Lanzarote grapples with the challenges of over-tourism, Morocco's rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and proactive tourism policies make it an increasingly attractive destination for British tourists

Morocco is rapidly becoming the go-to destination for British tourists, potentially at the expense of Lanzarote, an island in the Canary archipelago known for its unique volcanic landscapes. This shift in tourist preferences is driven by several factors, including Morocco’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and the growing appeal of its vibrant cities like Marrakech and Agadir.

The Charm of Morocco

Morocco offers a blend of ancient history and modern amenities that appeal to a wide range of tourists. From the bustling souks of Marrakech to the tranquil beaches of Agadir, the country provides a variety of experiences that cater to different interests.

The rich cultural heritage, including historic sites like the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca and the ancient medina of Fez, draws history enthusiasts. Meanwhile, the vibrant nightlife and luxurious accommodations in cities like Marrakech attract those seeking a more contemporary holiday experience.

Lanzarote’s Tourism Challenges

Lanzarote, on the other hand, has been facing challenges related to over-tourism. The island, with a population of just over 150,000, received 2.5 million tourists in 2022, which is 17 times its resident population.

This influx has led to concerns about environmental degradation and strain on local resources. The island’s authorities have even considered declaring it a “tourist-saturated area” to manage the flow of visitors better.

Moreover, there have been reports of anti-tourist sentiments among some locals, who are concerned about overcrowding and the behaviour of certain tourists. These issues have led to a re-evaluation of the island’s tourism strategy, with a focus on attracting “higher-quality” tourists who spend more and are more respectful of the environment.

Morocco’s Growing Appeal

Morocco has been proactive in attracting British tourists, leveraging its cultural and culinary appeal. Moroccan cuisine, which includes dishes like tagine and couscous, is highly regarded and figures in the top 20 favourite cuisines among Britons4. The country has also been investing in its tourism infrastructure, ensuring that visitors have a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

The city of Marrakech, in particular, has seen a surge in British visitors, with some reports suggesting that Britons might soon outnumber French tourists, who have traditionally been the largest European visitor group4. Agadir, another popular destination, has also seen a significant increase in tourist numbers, thanks to its beautiful beaches and modern amenities4.

Testimonial: A British Tourist’s Experience

John Smith, a frequent traveller from London, recently visited Morocco and shared his experience:

“I’ve been to Lanzarote several times, and while it’s a beautiful island, the crowds and the commercialisation have taken away some of its charm. This year, I decided to try Morocco, and I was blown away. The culture, the food, the people—everything was so authentic and vibrant. Marrakech was a highlight, with its bustling markets and historic sites. I felt like I was truly experiencing something new and exciting. I’ll definitely be going back to Morocco and recommending it to my friends.”

Conclusion

The shift in British tourist preferences from Lanzarote to Morocco is a testament to Morocco’s successful tourism strategies and the unique experiences it offers. While Lanzarote grapples with the challenges of over-tourism, Morocco’s rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and proactive tourism policies make it an increasingly attractive destination for British tourists.

As more travellers seek authentic and varied holiday experiences, Morocco is poised to become a top choice for UK holidaymakers.
