In September 2024, the Ibn Rochd University Hospital Center (CHU) in Casablanca unveiled its state-of-the-art emergency department, marking a significant advancement in Morocco’s public healthcare system. This modern facility is designed to provide rapid and comprehensive medical care, accommodating the bustling metropolis’s diverse and dense population.
A Modern Healthcare Hub
The new emergency department stands out with its pristine infrastructure, cutting-edge medical equipment, and a well-organized patient flow system. According to Professor Mohamed Benghanem Gharbi, director of Ibn Rochd Hospital, the facility manages an average of 300 patients daily, equating to one patient every five minutes.
He emphasizes, “It’s one of the most significant structures of its kind in Africa. All specialties are represented, with teams operating around the clock, seven days a week.”
Advanced Medical Equipment
Equipped with the latest medical technology, the department boasts advanced scanners, MRI machines, and ultrasound devices. A notable addition is a compact device capable of conducting blood analyses in under ten minutes, crucial for urgent cases requiring swift diagnostic refinement.
Efficient Patient Management
Under the leadership of Professor Mohamed Mouhaoui, a specialist in anesthesiology, resuscitation, and emergency medicine, the department has implemented a meticulous patient management system. Patients arrive either directly, often via the SAMU (Service d’Aide Médicale Urgente), or are referred from other hospitals through the regional coordination center. To prevent overcrowding, only the patient and one accompanying person are permitted entry.
Upon arrival, patients undergo an initial assessment in a dedicated area, followed by treatment in one of the 23 specialized boxes. Each box caters to specific medical needs, such as the thrombolysis unit, which administers critical treatment for stroke patients. This intervention is most effective when delivered within four and a half hours of the first symptoms.
Comprehensive Emergency Services
The department also features three operating rooms designated for urgent surgical procedures. Professor Mouhaoui notes, “The goal is to provide the most appropriate healthcare as swiftly as possible.”
Additionally, the facility houses an on-site simulation unit for various medical interventions and first aid training. While such training is typically available in medical schools, this marks the first instance of its integration within a public hospital in Morocco.
