Al Boraq High Speed Train: 7 Years of Records

Al Boraq high speed train traveling between Tangier and Casablanca on Morocco's modern railway

Al Boraq high speed train has completed more than 7 years of service and the numbers tell a remarkable story. Since its launch in November 2018, Morocco’s Al Boraq high speed line has transformed rail travel between Tangier and Casablanca. The train covers the 350-kilometer route in just 2 hours 10 minutes. Africa’s first high-speed railway has exceeded every expectation. In over 7 years, Al Boraq has carried more than 25 million passengers and set multiple performance records. This milestone is a moment to celebrate what Morocco has built and to look at what comes next.

Passenger Numbers That Exceed All Expectations

Al Boraq high speed service has recorded consistent growth in passenger numbers since 2018. By 2026, cumulative ridership has surpassed 25 million passengers  a figure that far exceeded ONCF’s original forecasts. Annual demand continues to rise each year.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a temporary drop in 2020 and 2021. However, recovery was rapid and complete. By 2024, Al Boraq had fully returned to record passenger volumes, and 2025 delivered the strongest annual ridership figures since the line opened.

Punctuality and Service Quality

One of Al Boraq’s most celebrated achievements is its punctuality record. The service consistently maintains an on-time performance rate above 94%. This places it among the most reliable high-speed railways in the world.

In addition, passenger satisfaction scores remain high across all surveys. Travelers praise the comfort, speed, and affordability of the service. Al Boraq has made high-speed rail accessible to a broad range of Moroccan passengers not just business travelers.

A Milestone for Africa and the Region

Al Boraq high speed is more than a railway. It is a symbol of Morocco’s infrastructure ambition and its role as a transport leader on the African continent. No other African country currently operates a comparable high-speed rail service.

Indeed, the line has attracted international attention and inspired similar projects across the region. As Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Al Boraq stands at the center of an expanding national rail network. As a result, the project continues to serve as a model for railway development across Africa.

Al Boraq High Speed: 7 Years Down, More Records Ahead

The Al Boraq high speed train has proven its value to Morocco in passenger numbers, economic impact, and national pride. After 7 years of milestone after milestone, the railway continues to grow. Therefore, the next chapter looks even more exciting.

ONCF is actively planning high-speed extensions to Marrakech and other major cities ahead of 2030. Al Boraq will play a central role in connecting World Cup host cities.
