Morocco Rose Festival 2026: Kelaat M’Gouna Guide

Pink Damascus rose fields in full bloom in the Valley of Roses near Kelaat M'Gouna, Morocco during the annual Rose Festival

Every spring, a small town in southern Morocco transforms into one of the most fragrant and colorful destinations on the continent. The Rose Festival Morocco 2026 takes place in Kelaat M’Gouna, officially known as the Rose Capital of Morocco, deep in the Dades Valley between the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. The whole region comes alive with music, parades, traditional dances, craft markets, and the crowning of the Rose Queen, a symbolic honor reflecting local pride and heritage. For travelers seeking an authentic, community-driven experience, this is one of the most rewarding events on the Morocco calendar.

What Is the Rose Festival Morocco and When Does It Take Place

The Rose Festival Morocco, locally known as the Moussem des Roses, celebrates the harvest of the precious Damask roses that grow across the Dades and M’Goun valleys. This is not a staged tourist event. It is a real harvest celebration rooted in centuries of Berber agricultural tradition.

The 2026 festival is confirmed for May 6 to 9, spanning 4 days and open to the public as a free event. However, dates can shift slightly depending on the natural rose harvest cycle. The roses must be at peak bloom, which depends on spring temperatures and rainfall, so official confirmation typically comes 6 to 8 weeks before the event.

Therefore, monitor the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) website in March and early April for the official announcement. Flexibility in your travel dates is a strong advantage.

Where Is Kelaat M’Gouna and How to Get There

Kelaat M’Gouna is situated approximately 330 kilometers east of Marrakech in the Tinghir Province, nestled at an elevation of about 1,450 meters in the Dades Valley. The town sits at the center of the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, one of Morocco’s most scenic driving routes.

The nearest airports are Ouarzazate (OZZ) and Marrakech (RAK). From Marrakech, the drive takes approximately 6 hours across the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass. By bus, CTM and Supratours serve the region regularly. Shared taxis from Ouarzazate or Tinghir offer a more local and economical option.

Additionally, many visitors choose to combine the Rose Festival Morocco with a Sahara Desert tour. Kelaat M’Gouna sits naturally between Merzouga and Ouarzazate, making it an ideal stop on a broader southern circuit.

What Happens at the Festival: Program and Highlights

The Rose Festival Morocco offers 4 days of activities centered on culture, tradition, and the rose harvest itself. Here is what to expect:

  • Rose Queen Parade: Local young women compete for the honor of representing the festival, judged on their knowledge of rose cultivation, cultural awareness, and poise. The parade winds through the main streets and is one of the most photographed events of the festival.
  • Ahwash Music and Dance: The most prominent musical style is ahwash, a collective dance performed in circles, accompanied by rhythmic drums, hand clapping, and call-and-response singing. These performances are genuine expressions of community identity, not staged for tourists.
  • Rose Distillery Visits: Visitors can tour local rose distilleries and witness how pink petals are transformed into rose water and essential oils. The air inside is filled with intense floral fragrance.
  • Artisan Markets: Open-air markets overflow with authentic rose products including pure rose water, essential oil, handmade soaps, perfumes, skin creams, and dried flowers, all made from locally harvested Damascus roses.

What Moroccan Travelers Say About the Rose Festival

Samira Ouhamou, Travel Writer, Marrakech

“I visited the Rose Festival Morocco for the first time in 2024 and returned in 2025. Nothing prepares you for the scale of the rose fields when they are in full bloom. The scent reaches you before you even enter the valley.

“The festival itself is quiet, human, and real. The Rose Queen parade is emotional in a way that large music festivals never are. I brought back rose water and essential oil. Both were authentic and genuinely exceptional quality. This is the kind of travel that stays with you.”

Where to Stay and Practical Tips for Visitors

Accommodation in Kelaat M’Gouna is limited and sells out quickly during the festival. It is recommended to stay in Skoura or Ouarzazate rather than in Kelaat M’Gouna itself. Skoura is approximately 1 hour away and Ouarzazate approximately 1.5 hours, both offering a wider range of accommodation including 4 and 5-star properties. The Dades Valley, located 30 to 40 minutes from the festival, also offers good-quality boutique kasbahs for travelers who prefer to stay close.

Here are the most important practical tips for your visit:

  • Arrive before 10 AM to avoid crowds and enjoy the freshest rose scent
  • Bring cash, as most artisan stalls do not accept cards
  • Dress in layers: spring mornings in the valley can be cool at 1,400 meters altitude
  • Buy rose essential oil carefully: authentic oil is expensive, and very cheap products are likely synthetic
  • Stay at least 1 night in the valley to experience the calm after the day crowds leave

Your Complete Rose Festival Morocco Travel Plan

The Rose Festival Morocco is one of the most distinctive and accessible cultural events in the country. No formal tickets are required for most activities, as many events are open to the public. Furthermore, the festival works naturally as part of a broader southern Morocco road trip combining the Dades Gorges, Todra Canyon, and the Sahara Desert.

Therefore, plan your trip for early May, book accommodation in advance, and allow at least 2 to 3 days in the region. The Rose Festival Morocco is not simply a flower market. It is a living celebration of Berber culture, seasonal rhythm, and a valley that has grown roses for centuries. Experience it once, and you will want to return.

Conclusion: The Valley Is Waiting

The Rose Festival Morocco offers something rare in modern travel: a celebration that belongs entirely to the people and the land that created it. Furthermore, it is free to attend, easy to combine with other destinations, and genuinely unlike anything else on the Morocco calendar. Whether you are a first-time visitor to southern Morocco or a returning traveler discovering a new route, Kelaat M’Gouna in May is a destination worth every kilometer of the drive. The roses bloom for a short window each year. Plan early, travel slowly, and let the Valley of Roses do the rest.
